Physical and Wind Properties of [WC] Stars
نویسنده
چکیده
We review the properties of carbon-sequence ([WC]) Wolf-Rayet central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNe). Differences between the subtype distribution of [WC] stars and their massive WC cousins are discussed. We conclude that [WO]-type differ from early-type [WC] stars as a result of weaker stellar winds due to high surface gravities, and that lateand early-type [WC] and [WO] stars generally span a similar range in abundances, X(He)∼X(C)≫X(O), consistent with a late thermal pulse, and likely progenitors to PG1159 stars.

Physical Properties of Wolf-Rayet Stars
The striking broad emission line spectroscopic appearance of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars has long defied analysis, due to the extreme physical conditions within their line and continuum forming regions. Recently, model atmosphere studies have advanced sufficiently to enable the determination of stellar temperatures, luminosities, abundances, ionizing fluxes and wind properties. The observed distribut...
متن کاملHydrodynamic model atmospheres for WR stars: Self-consistent modeling of a WC star wind
We present the first non-LTE atmosphere models for WR stars that incorporate a self-consistent solution of the hydrodynamic equations. The models account for iron-group line-blanketing and clumping, and compute the hydrodynamic structure of a radiatively driven wind consistently with the non-LTE radiation transport in the co-moving frame. We construct a self-consistent wind model that reproduce...
متن کاملAn explanation of observed trends in the X - ray emission from single Wolf - Rayet stars
The O and early B star winds show empirical correlations between X-ray (L x) and Bolometric (L Bol) luminosity as well as wind properties such as wind momentum and wind kinetic energy. Wolf-Rayet stars do not. We discuss scaling relations to qualitatively explain this lack of correlation among the WR winds and to quantitatively reproduce the observed ratio of X-ray luminosities between the N-ri...
متن کاملObserved Metallicity Dependence of Winds from WR stars
A review of observational evidence in favour of a metallicity dependence of WN and WC stars is presented. New near-IR studies of Milky Way, LMC and SMC early-type WN stars are presented, with weaker winds amongst WN stars containing hydrogen. A metallicity dependence is supported for WN stars with hydrogen, with dM/dt ∝ Zα with α ∼ 0.8±0.2 The influence of CNO content upon WN subtypes is discus...
متن کاملAn Ultraviolet to Mid-Infrared Study of the Physical and Wind Properties of HD 164270 (WC9) and Comparison to BD+30 3639 ([WC9])
We present new Spitzer IRS observations of HD 164270 (WC9, WR103). A quantitative analysis of the UV, optical, nearand mid-IR spectrum of HD 164270 is presented, allowing for line blanketing and wind clumping, revealing T∗ ∼48kK, logL/L⊙ ∼ 4.9, Ṁ ∼ 10M⊙ yr for a volume filling factor of f ∼0.1. Our models predict that He is partially recombined in the outer stellar wind, such that recent radio-...
